Olympic Wrap-Up (So far)
By Robin Dawson

Sunday in Beijing (Saturday night for us here in the U.S.) was a big, big day at the Olympics Games!  If you went to sleep early to prepare for today’s match and missed the action be sure to check out all the news!  There were some absolutely Great Sports Moments!

In brief:

41-year-old American swimmer Dara Torres grabbed two silver medals, one in the 50-free, and the other swimming the anchor leg in the 400-meter medley relay.

38-year old Romanian marathoner Constantina Tomescu took the gold in the women’s marathon.  Maybe not in record time, but all that Colorado training (I’m a bit biased here) kept her well out in front of the literal sprint to the finish that followed for the silver and bronze.

America’s sweethearts and women’s beach volleyball favorites Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh’s 106th straight win secured them a spot in the semi-finals.

Jamaica’s Usain Bolt proved he’s the world’s fastest man by literally running away from the field in a world record 9.69 second 100-meter final.

And what can you say about this guy?  American swimming phenomenon Michael Phelps did what he set out to do.  After his unprecedented eighth trip to the gold medal stand Phelps told NBC’s Bob Costas he had what was probably the “best week of my life.”

In event final number eight of eight events entered, Phelps swam the butterfly leg of the 400-meter medley relay and helped the team of Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen, Phelps, and anchor Jason Lezak set yet another world record along the way.

In tennis news Rafael Nadal took the gold over Chile’s Fernando Gonzales.  Roger Federer was beaten by American James Blake early on in singles, but Federer and partner Stanislas Wawrinka won gold in men’s doubles for Switzerland.

On the ladies side, Russian Elena Dementieva took the gold over country woman Dinara Safina.  The Williams sisters won gold for the U.S. over the Spanish team of Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual.
