The players at Southbridge Racquet Club in Savannah really stick together.
A large group of them came together to form three teams participating here
at the State Championships. And yes – many of them played on more than one
of these teams. Some are members of all three, but rules only allow a
player to compete on two teams at the same Sate Championships.
Seven players from Captain Greg Stewart’s 8.0 Senior Team also played here
on Captain Chris Lane’s 8.0 Adult Team. And 9.0 Adult Team Captain Daryl
Bondurant willingly shared some of his players with Stewart’s 8.0 Senior
Team.
How in the world did they keep all this straight? And how many matches a
day were these folks playing, anyway?
Well, I asked…
Greg Stewart (8.0 Senior Captain, if you’ve forgotten by now) admits
coordinating the logistics of all the different match times and all the
different locations for three different teams in three different categories
“was tricky!”
8.0 Senior Team member Norma Johnston (who had a little more time to talk as
she wasn’t rounding up what sure seemed a good number of the players here at
Newman Sunday afternoon) said, “After each match the captains had to
physically assess each player to see who was feeling good, who needed a
rest, and who could actually get as close to being in two different places
at once as possible.”
Norma said the maximum number of matches a team member played in one day was
three, but said that wasn’t uncommon at all.
So
how’d they fare?
Team Bondurant (9.0 Adults) took first place!
Team Stewart (8.0 Seniors) also took first place!
Team Lane didn’t do so well, but who can blame them? These folks have got
to be exhausted!
Congratulations to each of you! What a feat – in organization alone!
